Ralph Bennett*, AIA, LEED-AP BD&C
Ralph Bennett is President of Bennett Frank McCarthy Architects, of Silver Spring, Maryland. He is Professor Emeritus in the School of Architecture Planning and Preservation at the University of Maryland where he taught in the design studio program at all levels, graduate and undergraduate for 31 years. Since the Spring of 2010, he has taught a course called “Measuring Sustainability”.
Bennett is a former Commissioner and Chair of the Montgomery County Housing Opportunities Commission. He is Vice-Chair of the Affordable Housing Conference of Montgomery County and is President of Purple Line NOW, an advocacy group for light rail between Bethesda and New Carrollton.
Daniel (Dan) Coffey*
Dan is Vice President of Therrien Waddell, Inc. where he manages commercial construction projects from new buildings to renovation and alterations projects. His experience includes commercial office, retail, community centers, daycare, religious, institutional, multi-family, bio science lab, and mission critical data center projects. He is one of the founding members of the USGBC NCR Montgomery County Branch and serves as the Chairman. Dan is also very active in construction management education as adjunct faculty for the last 18 years for Montgomery College and the University of Maryland. He presents to local industry trade associations on current trends and topics in construction management, Net Zero construction practices, sustainability, project management and leadership training. Dan is Chairman of the Industry Advisory Committee for Montgomery College Construction Management Program as well as a Member of the NAIOP Maryland DC Sustainability Committee, the Associated Builders and Contractors Management Education Committee plus several other volunteer positions.
Dan holds a Bachelors degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland and an Associate Degree from Montgomery College in Construction Management.
Eileen Emmet**, AIA, LEED AP
Eileen Emmet is an architectural project manager with the M-NCPPC, Montgomery County Department of Parks, Park Development Division. She is responsible for managing Capital Improvement Program planning and design projects within the park system. Recent projects include planning and design for the rehabilitation of cultural resource properties of local and national historic significance including installations of unique exhibit programs. Private sector experience includes a variety of project types while working with Oehme van Sweden Associates, Shalom Baranes Associates and HOK in Washington, D.C. Eileen holds a Masters in Architecture Degree from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree in painting and sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects Potomac Valley Chapter and is the Advocacy Committee Chair for Montgomery County.
William (Bill) Le Roy**, AIA, BBP, NCARB
William is a Senior Project Manager with Waldon Studio Architects. He has eighteen years of work experience and is a licensed architect in Maryland and Washington, D.C. He is a project manager emphasizing climate responsive design, and preservation issues for institutional clients and historic landmark properties. His careful attention to detail resulted in praise from clients as well as awards from the profession, including the National AIA award for design excellence. William’s experience includes delivering architectural services in technical and high-end design, in addition to small and large budget institutional projects.
William sits on the preservation committee of the Whole Building Design Guide and recently completed graduate level continuing education coursework at Catholic University on building science. Outside the profession, William is a founding member of a local non-profit whose mission is to promote sustainable living. William maintains active participation in the DC chapter of the Association for Preservation Technology International. He recently lectured on issues related to sustainability and preservation at AIADC and at Hood College, respectively.
William received academic and architectural design honors while studying at the Syracuse University School of Architecture and at the division of international program abroad studio in Florence, Italy.
Kirill Pivovarov*, AIA, LEED AP
Kirill Pivovarov is a Principal architect at RTKL’s Workplace Studio in its Washington D.C. office. He has architecture and master planning experience at RTKL Associates and also at Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn Architects and Daniel Libeskind Architectural Studio in Berlin.
His experience as the design leader on complex projects is highlighted with high profile national and international projects, competitions and AIA awards. Kirill has a special interest in integrated, performance driven design process, sustainability, and is currently serving on RTKL’s corporate-wide Performance Driven Design Leadership Council.
Geoff Sharpe*, ASLA
Geoff Sharpe is a Planning & Development Manager with Edens, a four billion dollar real estate development company. He is responsible for managing the design, documentation and entitlement of complex, mixed-use urban projects. He is a registered landscape architect with 13 years experience in urban design and entitlement. Before joining Edens, Geoff worked for the Washington office of RTKL on a variety of urban design projects in the US and overseas. Prior to RTKL, he worked for EDAW in their Alexandria office.
Geoff holds a masters degree in landscape architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and a BA in chemistry and German literature from Oberlin College. He is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Urban Land Institute and the American Planning Association. He has won awards from the Washington Smart Growth Alliance and the American Planning Association.
Amy Upton*, LEED AP BD+C
Amy Upton is Director of Environmental Design at Grimm + Parker. Amy has focused on the design and construction of educational, recreation, and community-focused public projects at Grimm + Parker Architects for the past 11 years. She is skilled at new construction, renovations, additions and alterations with a strong emphasis in K-12 education. As Grimm + Parker’s LEED Coordinator and Director of Environmental Design, Ms. Upton is committed to exploring the latest sustainable design practices and implementing green design strategies wherever possible. Amy is currently a member of the USGBC National Capital Region Chapter and Associate AIA DC.
Adam Spatz*, PE, LEED AP
Adam Spatz is a Senior Mechanical Engineer with Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. with over fifteen years of experience in HVAC design and construction. He has design experience in mission critical facilities, central chiller plants, secure government sites, and speculative office buildings.
Paul Tseng*, PE, LEED AP, CxAP, CPMP, CEM, CMVP
Paul Tseng is the founder and principal of Advanced Building Performance, Inc., an independent commissioning and high performance building consulting firm for commercial and institutional owners. Tseng served on the ASHRAE Guideline Committees that wrote the Guideline 0 on Commissioning Process and Guideline 3 on HVAC Commissioning Process. He also serve on the NIBS Guideline Committee that developed the Commissioning Guidelines for Exterior Enclosures. He is on the adjunct faculty at U Wisconsin-Madison teaching commissioning to practitioners for the past 22 years. He has personally commissioned over 130 LEED and HVAC projects.
Tom Urie*, R.A. LEED AP
Tom Urie is an architect with Urie P.C. Architects. He has been in private practice since 1986. He is 1977 graduate of the University of Maryland with Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science (Urban Studies) degrees. He is a member of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Code Council (ICC), Archaeological Institute of America (AIA), and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
Justin Wiley has been with the International Code Council since 2007 and is currently Director of External Relations in Washington, DC. His primary responsibility is developing and managing relationships with national organizations, federal agencies, and Congress. Justin also serves as the primary contact for state and local governments within the greater Washington, DC area. Preceding his move from Utah to Washington, DC in 2008, Justin served as the ICC Government Relations Manager for the Rocky Mountain region where he oversaw code adoption and implementation at state and local levels.
Prior to joining the International Code Council, Mr. Wiley served as an advisor on policy and political affairs for the Salt Lake County Council where he impacted local ordinance for Salt Lake County, Utah. Mr. Wiley holds a Master of Business Administration in Technology Management from Westminster College and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Southern Utah University.
