Liz Petrella, LEED AP, of the National Park Service will discuss these guidelines, issued by the Secretary of the Interior, which stress the inherent sustainability of historic buildings and offer specific guidance to architects and owners on preferred rehabilitation treatments. The standards pertain to historic buildings of all materials, construction types, sizes and occupancy and include both exteriors and interiors, the building’s site, environment, landscape, and attached or adjacent new construction.

How can we attempt to help guide neighborhoods, towns, and cities and overcome the failures of the past, address current issues, and anticipate the needs of the future when we lack of a common language on urban design?

Dhiru Thadani is the creator of a visual “encyclodictionary” that allows the professional and the layperson easy access to a vast source of ideas, materials, and methods, at once comprehensive and accessible. He will speak on what he calls “the language of towns & cities,” (from his book of the same name).

Thadani is the recipient of the 2011 Seaside Prize. He is a practicing architect, planner, and educator who has worked in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, in urban design, town planning, and architectural design.
