Thursday, Feb. 21 was the Emerging Professionals Committee’s first Cocktails + Creative Exchange at McGinty’s Public House in Silver Spring. Members and non-members showed up with 8.5 x 11 prints of their creative work and laid them out for display. These printed works spurred people to talk about each other’s work in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Facade Forensics

The November 29 program on “facade forensics” by structural engineer Michael Drerup of Walter P. Moore proved to be a popular draw. Who knew that the detective work of discovering and evaluating failures of building envelopes would attract such a large audience? Attendees to the Rockville library presentation were fascinated by Mike’s case studies and tales of the many things that can go wrong with a building’s envelope. He demonstrated through a power point presentation how a forensic specialist goes about the methodical work of discovering the sources of facade and roof problems. The goal is usually to resolve structural or materials issues in order to preserve or restore–or, in some cases, to redesign–the failed parts of a building’s envelope. At the end of his presentation, Mike was peppered with questions related to skin issues familiar to individual audience members. As demonstrated by the depth of discussion, this is clearly a subject of interest to many architects and affiliates, and the chapter will schedule additional programs in the future to accommodate our members’ sense of thrall with the subject.

Black Ankle strawbale

I have always wanted to build with straw bales. I have fantasies of growing it in a field or even a city park one year and then changing that horizontal fluidity into vertical stability, infilling a mid rise commercial or multifamily building with bales.
Black Ankle Vineyards has enviably expanded their magic trick of turning sun rain and soil into things we love (red and white) into the realm of architecture. See images of the Tasting Room construction here.

2011 AIAPV Design Awards and Gala

Here’s a quick snapshot of the 2011 AIAPV Design Awards and Gala! Check back for a full review of the night’s festivities!

The event was held at the Forest Glen Seminary Ballroom.

We had some great food and drink at the Gala!

Join Us For The 2011 AIAPV Architecture Week!

Architecture Week is the signature educational and networking event of the American Institute of Architects Potomac Valley Chapter. The week celebrates and honors the design contributions of area architects to the built environment with a series of expert-led tours and discussions, plus some fun networking opportunities.

Architecture Week culminates October 22 with the Chapter’s 2011 Design Awards Gala, held at the beautifully-restored Ballroom at the Seminary at Forest Glen, just off the Beltway in Montgomery County, Maryland.

All events–with the exception of the 2011 Design Awards Gala–are free and open to the public. However, we request that you use pre-register for events through this site.
